Waka Quest
The flagship vessel, Haunui, is berthed at Auckland’s Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum and is a waka hourua, a double-hulled ocean voyaging waka, able to take twenty-five passengers on short journeys. ‘Waka on the Waitemata’ is a two-and-a-half-hour authentic Māori cultural experience. Participants gather in the Hawaiki Gallery at Voyager, then enjoy a traditional welcome and karakia on board the waka. They then ‘buddy-up’ with a crew member to man the hoe and prepare some kai. Participants hoist the sails and sit with the navigator who tells them about recent journeys of the seven voyaging waka, and demonstrates how it is possible to sail 20,000 km navigating just by the stars.
